Look Back To Move Forward from Charity White on Vimeo.

Each original artwork is hand painted with acrylic paint by CVCA art students on 3'- 4' x  4' wood panels made by CVCA carpentry students. These artworks are self portraits designed in photoshop and collaboratively finished as a mural painting. Scroll down for more on the steps in our process.

STAGES AND STEPS IN OUR PROCESS

Assignment

Picture
What is the difference between a scream, a sigh, a shout, a laugh, a yell, a command, and a question?

How do you imagine the words flowing out of your mouth? Do they spew, float, fall or billow out?

What do the words looks like? Are they jagged, soft, small, bold, or curling?

Based on class discussions about art activism, the AfriCOBRA art movement, and race relations in Chicago, students will begin to explore how their thoughts and emotions can be expressed through body language, imagery, fonts, color, and gesture.

Photography

Students began by photographing each other from a variety of angles and poses to help them think about their message and how to best convey it.

Student Photoshop Artwork

Students then put their images in photoshop and began experimenting with color, text, and shapes to create design their AfriCOBRA inspired artworks.

In process Painting

After a class critique and discussion of the final photoshop projects, the most powerful images and messages were selected to be translated into large scale paintings.
